Sun City was officially opened on 7 December 1979 and was developed by Mr. Sol Kerzner as part of the Sun International property group.
It is home to four hotels: The Palace of the Lost City, the Cascades, the Cabanas and the Sun City Hotel.
It is also home to the famous Valley of the Waves.
Sun City has a wide variety of Restaurants and Bars to cater to every taste.
Gary Player, one of South Africa’s golfing Champions, designed both of Sun City’s world famous golf courses: The Lost City Golf Course and The Gary Player Golf Course and Country Club which hosts the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge.

At the time it was built in Bophuthatswana, a region that had been declared independent by the South African government.
No other country in the world regarded Bophthatswana as independent, however, because it was seen as independent bye the South African government, the laws were different and allowed “immoral” activities such as gambling that were at the time illegal in South Africa.
In 1985, Steven van Zandt from the E Street Band started a musical activism group called Artist United Against Apartheid. In this group top artists pledged not to perform at Sun City until Apartheid came to an end. Despite this, some world famous singers continued to perform at Sun City, adding to the controversy.
World famous artists that performed at Sun City include: Queen, Tina Turner, Boney M, Dame Kiri Janette Te Kanawa, Elaine Page, Elton John, Rod Steward, Linda Ronstadt, Julio Iglesias, The O’Jays, Ray Charles, Black Sabbath, Dionne Warwick, Laura Branigan and Thomas Anders of Modern Talking.
