Baviaanskrans Route Hiking Trail – Rustenburg
Description
The Baviaanskrans Route Hiking Trail is a beautiful 2-day hike that takes you (from the basecamp Avon More) uphill to the Garden of Remembrance. Following the Magaliesberg stream towards the Tierkloof Waterfall, hikers can take a dip in the rock pools that’s further on the trail. This trail joins the Summit Route Hiking trail where you can climb a steep hill to the beacon found at Bakenkop. The Explorers Overnight Camp (and the sign of the end of day 1) is at the end of a steep descent down the east side of the Magaliesberg. The hike can also be started from the eastern situated Explorer’s Camp to take the route to the southern sitauted Avon More camp.

Directions to Baviaanskrans Route Hiking Trail
From the main gate of the Kgaswane Mountain Reserve, follow the path down to the Avon More Camp, situated south of the Magaliesberg slopes. If wanting to start from the Explorer’s Camp, then this site lies to the east of the main gate at the slopes of the Magaliesberg.

The hike on the Baviaankrans Route can be started at one of the following two basecamps / overnight facilities:

It is recommended that hikers should take the Avon More as start-off base camp.
End
Depending on where you started you’ll end at the following:
Day 1: Explorers Camp (if started from Avon More) – Avon More Camp (if started at Explorers)
Day 2: End at start after the trail winds up at the beacon of Bakenkop & then descends steeply to cross Bobbejaanskloof (from Avon More).

At the Kgaswane Reserve you’ll find picnic spots perfect for relaxing and bird watching.
Braai facilities and ablution blocks are near the visitor’s centre. One could expect to see different types buck and birds, while the sight of the Magaliesberg and the view of Rustenburg is a stunning one.
On the Summit Route Trail you’ll come across the Tierkloof Waterfall – if you’re not doing the whole trail, but would like to go to the waterfall, please let the management team know before embarking on your trip.
What to Take
You will need the following:
- Hat
- sunglasses
- swimsuits – bathing is allowed in the natural pools along the route
- sturdy hiking shoes & socks
- plasters for those blisters
- insect repellent
- backpack with enough refreshments and water for 2 days
- camera,
- binoculars for the birdwatchers & observing wildlife
Please Note
Important points to remember about this hike:
- It is a stiff walk for the more advanced hiker – a lot of steep slopes and uphill climbs.
- Remember your bathing suit as the cool pools along the trail are inviting during the hot summer months.
- An early start is recommended to make sure that the hike is concluded the first day before nightfall.
- Be on the look-out for the strange rock formations that are found at the different sites on the trail.
- Be aware of loose rocks that could hinder your hike.
