CANSA helps you to fight cancer through it's unique integrated service driven by research

Who We Are

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is a community-driven and volunteer-based organisation that has been fighting cancer for the past 80 years. Started in 1931 by a group of medical professionals concerned about the high incidence of cancer, CANSA has grown to become one of the leading cancer NGOs in the country with 45 offices around the country and more than 12 000 volunteers and 260 staff members.

What We Do

CANSA Rustenburg is part of CANSA and as one of the leading cancer control organisations in Southern Africa, funds cancer research, influences policy makers and educates the public on the prevention and detection of cancer, as well as provides comprehensive support to people affected by or treated for cancer. CANSA realises that the words “you have cancer”, or being told that “your cancer has reoccurred”, could change your life and even make you and your loved ones feel shocked, out of control and helpless.

Support

Cancer Coping Kit The Cancer Coping Kit, created by two survivors, (comprising of two audio CDs) helps those recently diagnosed with cancer, and their loved ones cope by providing information and practical tools to promote physical, emotional and mental well-being before and during treatment. The Kit is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (Lotto) and is available in English, Afrikaans, Sotho and Zulu. Get a free copy at any CANSA office, or download it from our website. Support groups CANSA’s active support groups connect patients, long-term survivors and their loved ones with others who have ‘been there’ for insight, moral support & understanding, hope and inspiration. It includes ‘Hoping is Coping’ (based on the Cancer Coping Kit), Sharing and Caring groups (groupings of patients with various types of cancer) and many more.

Advocacy

Fighting for your health by making informed and smart choices. To be more effective in our efforts to control cancer and to act as a voice for the public, CANSA Rustenburg performs a ‘watchdog’ role to influence South African policy makers, and to create public awareness in Rustenburg of known cancer-causing factors. Statistics show that one in four South Africans is affected by cancer in his or her lifetime. More than 100 000 South Africans are diagnosed with cancer yearly, with over 60 000 South Africans losing the battle against the disease each year.

Research

How cancer research benefits you? As a leading role-player in cancer research, CANSA as an organisation in Rustenburg and in the rest of South Africa, and in partnership with the Medical Research Council (MRC) and National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) through the Cancer Research Initiative in South Africa (CARISA) funds more than R4.5 million on various types of cancer research in South Africa every year. CANSA ensures that the scientific findings and knowledge gained from our research realign our advocacy focus (our watchdog role) and strengthen our health programme to the greater benefit of the public.

Cancer Screening

CANSA Rustenburg fights cancer by making the public aware of the importance of the early detection of cancer that enables more effective treatment and a better chance of recovery. CANSA Rustenburg facilitates cancer screening clinics to reach as many people as possible and help refer those diagnosed with cancer and need treatment. Spot-the-spot skin clinics are held between November and February to help detect skin cancer. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing help to detect prostate cancer in men, while breast examinations and Pap smears are conducted to help detect breast and cervical cancer respectively. CANSA’s seven mobile clinics travel to remote areas throughout South Africa to reach people who would otherwise not have the opportunity to get screened.

Surviving cancer

An estimated one million South Africans are long-term cancer survivors. While celebrating life and survivorship, CANSA Rustenburg realises that survivors must be nurtured and supported to reduce the longterm impact and complications of cancer treatment. CANSA Rustenburg realises that survivorship is about living with the emotional and physical effects of a cancer diagnosis, and that support should not end after treatment. If you are living with or beyond cancer, please share your thoughts or experiences by emailing us at survivorship@cansa.org.za. Your comments will help us develop a support programme for long-term survivors.

We would love to hear from you.
