Save our donkeys, they are not medicine!
The rumours of donkeys being the latest target for trade in animal parts to the Far East has been confirmed by the National Council of SPCAs.
Donkeys are slaughtered as the hide of the donkey is believed to have medicinal properties. Claims to this regard, spread in China, include that donkey hide has among others, anti-ageing properties and the gelatine from donkeys is used in their medical industry for tonics and tablets.
The donkey skin trade also affects the North West Province. Donkeys are stolen, slaughtered and skinned in horrific circumstances. This is to say the least, totally inhumane and unacceptable!
Donkey owners are urged to take precautions to safeguard their donkeys and an urgent appeal is made: anyone with information of any kind may contact the NSPCA via nspca@nspca.co.za. You may remain anonymous. Please share any information that will help to track down and bring to justice those involved in this cruel trade.
