What to take to renew your car licence
To renew your motor vehicle licence take the following to your nearest licencing department:
- ID (Green barcoded ID book or new smart card ID) and a copy.
- Proof of residential address such as a utility bill that is less than 3 months old. If the name of someone else appears on the bill you will have to supply an affidavit of the owner to state that you reside at that address.
- if your details have changed, you must complete and hand in an NCP form (notification of change in particulars). This form is available at all licensing authorities or to download here.
- If you are residing in an informal settlement, you will need a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your residential address.
- Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you don’t have the renewal notice, complete the ALV1 (Application for Licensing of Motor vehicle) form. These forms are available from any registering authority and selected post offices and can be downloaded from eNa TIS website or licenserenewal.co.za
- Appropriate licencing fees – generally cash only. (Contact your local licencing office for the cost)
To renew vehicles of an organisation:
- The business certificate of the organization.
- ID of proxy/representative.
- Letter of proxy.
- Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you don’t have the renewal notice, complete the ALV1 (Application for Licensing of Motor vehicle) form. These forms are available from any registering authority and selected post offices and can be downloaded from eNa TIS website or licenserenewal.co.za
- Appropriate licencing fees – generally cash only. (Contact your local licencing office for the cost)
Buses:
Licences for buses must be renewed every 6 months (bi-annually) as the certification of roadworthyness is only valid for 6 months.

Renewal of someone else’s vehicle licence:
- The owner of the vehicle’s ID book or ID smart card and it’s copy.
- Proof of their residential address such as a utility bill not older than 3 months.
- An official letter stating that they have sent you on their behalf to do the car licence renewal.
- Appropriate licencing fees – generally cash only. (Contact your local licencing office for the cost)
