The Fidget Spinner craze hits Rustenburg!
If you have kids you’ve probably heard about the latest craze, fidget spinners. They have also taken Rustenburg by storm.
When my kids told me about the coolest toy ever and that they convinced their dad to order it from takealot.com, I expected something high tech and extraordinary. With great excitement they took these tiny, shiny objects from the packaging and spun it…. I waited in anxious anticipation for it to take off, make a sound, light up or something….. Is that it? It only spuns. I couldn’t believe that they are so fascinated with something so “basic”.
The fidget spinner exists of a bearing in the centre of a design with two, three or more prongs. It is made of a variety of materials e.g. brass, stainless steel, titanium and plastic.
The longer it spins, the better the spinner. This performance depends on the material and the bearing, so some physics involved after all. Oh, and to my surprise and delight there are actually some of them that lights up while spinning.
The fidget spinner was invented in the 1990’s as a stress-relieving toy for children suffering from ADHD, autism, anxiety and other problems causing difficulty in concentration. Apparently the momentum of the spinning fidget provides a pleasing sensory experience which is a release mechanism for stress.
Controversy exists on whether it is a help or a distraction and I think the answer lies in whether it is used as a tool or a toy.
Although I don’t think a lot of the fidget spinner, YouTube has a lot to share on the subject and topics range from How to use it, Tricks and even Injuries caused by Fidget Spinners.
Whether we love or hate it, fidget spinners are here to stay….until the next craze.
Look on the bright side, at least our kids are doing something physical. While their eyes are glued to the television and cell phone screens, the fingers are happily fidgeting.
