Description

The Summit Route Hiking Trail is a picturesque, 2-day hike for those who’d like to explore the regions of the Magaliesberg Mountains. It’s ideal for birdwatchers and animal lovers – you can expect to see collections of warthog or Zebra on your way.  The peculiar rock formations are a beautiful sight.

Look out for the sable antelope – the Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is one of the few places where this animal is bred successfully.

  • Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is home to over 250 bird species – the Cape Vulture is one of the special species to be seen.
  • Be on the look-out for zebras and sables.

Directions to the Summit Route Trail, Rustenburg

The Summit Route Hiking trail starts at the Witkruiskrans basecamp (500 metres from Kgaswane Mountain Reserve parking area / visitor centre).

Pay Entrance Fee at gate of Kgaswane Mountain Reserve.

Features

  • At the Kgaswane Reserve you’ll find picnic spots – perfect for relaxing and bird watching.
  • Braai facilities and ablution blocks are available near the visitor’s centre. You can expect to see a variety of buck and bird life.
  • The sight of the Magaliesberg and the view of Rustenburg is not a view to be missed.
  • On the Summit Route Trail you’ll come across the Tierkloof Waterfall.  If you choose not to do the full trail, but would like to go to the waterfall, please let the management team know before you set off.

What to Take

You will need the following:

  • hat
  • sunglasses,
  • swimsuits – bathing is allowed in the natural pools along the route
  • sturdy hiking shoes & socks
  • plasters for those blisters
  • insect repellent
  • backpack with enough refreshments and water for 2 days
  • camera
  • binoculars for bird watching & observing wildlife

Please Note

Important points to remember about this hike:

  • It is a stiff walk for the more advanced hiker – lot of steep slopes and uphill climbs.
  • Remember your bathing suit as the cool pools along the trail could become inviting during the hot summer months.
  • An early start is recommended to make sure that the hike is concluded the first day before nightfall.
