Rustenburg & Buffelspoort Vets’ campaign to combat Rabies
With a positive diagnosis in Olifantsnek, the Rustenburg community should be on high alert for animals showing signs of Rabies.
Rabies is a viral disease that gets transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal. Both humans and animals can contract the virus, which affects the nervous system of the host and is fatal to animals and humans already showing symptoms.
Dogs, cats, cattle and wild animals suspected of being carriers of the disease should be avoided and your local- or State Vet should be contacted.
Most common signs of Rabies in animals:
Abnormal behaviour, wild animals appear tame and pets become overly aggressive.
Excessive salivation
Fear of water
Prevention:
Dogs and cats should be vaccinated and vets from Rustenburg and Buffelspoort joined forces to combat the disease and attempt to limit a potential outbreak. Until the end of February they will vaccinate dogs and cats for R50 per Rabies vaccine. This will include proof of vaccination but not a clinical examination.
