Renewing your drivers licence: Your questions answered
Renewing your drivers licence is an experience that South African drivers can’t escape as drivers licences need to be renewed every 5 years. We have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions and answers to help smooth the process.
Where do I go to renew my drivers’ licence?
Do a search for a driving licence testing station in your area.

What do I need to renew my drivers’ licence?
- ID Document – Original ID or smartcard ID, or valid South African passport.
- A copy of the relevant ID document.
- Proof of residence – an official document not older than 3 months that clearly states your address.
(If the utility bill is not in your name you will have to supply an affidavit of the owner to state that you reside at hat address. If you are residing in an informal settlement, you will need a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your residential address.) - Pen.
- Glasses or contact lenses if you drive with them.
- Your current licence.
- 4 Black and White ID photographs (Number of photos are dependent on the driving licence testing station and also whether you require a temporary licence)
- DL1 (Green) form – This form can be obtained at the testing centre or online from the eNatis website (click here)

Do I need to take a driving test to renew my drivers licence?
No, you will not be required to do a driving test.
Do I need to have my eyes tested at the driving licence testing centre?
You can have your eyes tested by an optometrist and submit the report at the driving testing centre (according to South African Government website) but this seems to differ for different testing stations.
How much does it cost to renew my drivers’ licence?
You will have to obtain this information from your local licencing office.
How long does it take to get the new drivers licence?
4 – 6 Weeks.
Is there a grace period for expired drivers licence?
No. You must renew your drivers licence card in time. If you renew it after the expiry date, you will have to apply for a temporary licence at additional cost.
Are there fines for late renewals?
There are no fines for late renewals.
Can I send someone else to collect my drivers licence?
Yes, but the person collecting will need the following:
- An affidavit from you stating why you can not collect the licence yourself and including the name and ID number of the person fetching the drivers licence.
- Your (the person getting the new licence) ID.
- A certified copy of the person fetching the licence ID.
