Mountain Bike Routes and Trails – Magaliesburg and surrounds

If you are an avid Mountain Bike Rider who wants to try out new MTB routes and trails without having to travel too far, consider these exciting options in the Magaliesburg, Muldersdrift, Skeerpoort area:
Tracker Ridefree Bike Park at Avianto

Avianto Trails have their starting points at Avianto clubhouse in Muldersdrift.  These trails comprise a total of 35 km of well-maintained trail consisting of 90% single track.

Different options according to skills and fitness levels are offered:  the white and green loops for beginners, an excellent introduction to mountain biking, and add blue loops as skill levels and fitness increase.  Trail Runners are also welcome.

Route options:

  • 2.5km red kiddie’s loop – doesn’t cross any roads, is an easy Jeep track which is easily manageable by kiddies.
  • 6 km white loop – more advanced than the kiddie’s loop but keeps to wider roads and jeep track, suitable for beginners.
  • 12 km green route east or west – mirrors the blue route but makes use of easier trail diversions when the going gets tough.
  • 17 km blue route east – for intermediate level mountain bikers.
  • 18 km blue route west – for intermediate level mountain bikers.
  • Black Loop – these peel off from the blue route and add advanced sections as well as more distance to the blue route. These routes are for advanced riders only and you ride this route at your own risk.

Please note that bands must be bought before riding on these trails and are available at the Avianto clubhouse (open from 6:00 to 14:00 on weekends and public holidays). After hours and during the week both riders and runners can purchase their trail bands from the Avianto Main reception on the other side of the river from the clubhouse.

The Cradle of Humankind Loop

This route is just for cyclists.  It has cycling lanes so that both cars ans bikes can be on the road, thus safe for all.  It is a very scenic route and the terrain has a lot of hills but also downhills for recovery.  Take along enough water as this route is 43 km long and will take about one and a half to two and a half hours to complete.  The fact that this trail is a loop provide for different distances, e.g. if you feel up to a 150 km route, ride the loop 3 times.

There are ablution facilities along the way from the restaurants as well as car parking at the Riverstone Lodge (just offf the N14 in Muldersdrift) in the Cradle.   Something Country along the R114 also provides parking and safe surroundings for family members waiting for riders.

Cradle to Caves and back

This route has cycling lanes so it is quite safe.  This route has a lot of hills and can be quite tough in places but the downhills on the way back make up for it.

It is 37 km long and will take one to two hours depending on your speed.  The restaurants and the Riverstone Lodge serve as places for ablutionsmtb 2

Van Gaalen Trails

Grading:  Intermediate to extreme.

Situated at Van Gaalen Cheese Farm in Skeerpoort (MTB, trail running, hiking, birding)

There is about 100 km of trail available with the starting point at Van Gaalens Restaurant.

The core riding loops are mainly on single-track, jeep track and some horse trails, with additional options along servitude and gravel roads.

If you would like to enjoy the trails in Skeerpoort, walking, hiking or on your mountain bike, you can get a day permit and sign an indemnity at the farm.  Open from 06:00 in summer in the weekends and 07:00 in winter.  Access limited or closed when there are events.

Facilities include a restaurant and toilets at the start, picnic spots next to the river and accommodation.

The COH Gateway 2 Gateway MTB Trail

mtb 262Grading:  Easy to intermediate.

This single track recreational trail offers riders the choice between a 5 km easy “Green” beginner trail section or a 13 km “Blue” trail section suited to more experienced riders. Combine the two trails for a 18 km trail.

The trail can be accessed from numerous hospitality venues eg. Riverstone Lodge, Avianto, Something Country, Kloofzicht Lodge and the Rhino and Lion Reserve. These venues provide parking, toilet facilities and refreshments to trail users.
