How to use Jumper Cables
To most people knowledge of vehicles and their technical workings are a bit hazy. If you are then confronted with a vehicle that won’t start, you have to explore uncertain territory….
Well, the logical first course of action would be to try and get it started as soon as possible. To jump start the vehicle with the use of jumper cables is a way to find out if the problem lies with the battery.
The following diagram on the correct use of jumper cables is informative and easy to follow. It might also be a good idea to print and keep in the glove compartment.
Important points before getting started:
1. Both vehicles should be off before starting the procedure.
2. Warning: If either vehicle has an electronic ignition system or is an alternatively fueled vehicle, the use of jumper cables may damage it.
If your vehicle doesn’t start after the correct procedure it might indicate that the battery does not keep the charge and needs to be replaced.
If your vehicle does start after the procedure, keep the engine running and drive around for at least 15 minutes to recharge your battery. The battery should be monitored and if it doesn’t start again the next time, it needs to be replaced.
