Local Personality: Caroline Edwards – local singer
For Caroline Edwards, singing is a way of life. Some of her listeners describe her voice as being that of “rich, warm coffee” and are always willing to listen and relax in Caroline’s presence.
Caroline growing up
Caroline was born in Port Edward, Kwa-Zulu Natal, but moved with her family to Sun City when she was only 3. They only moved to Rustenburg when she was about 10 or 11 and states that she “basically grew up here”. Till she was 15 she went to Fields College, after which her parents decided to home school her and her older sister.
“Home schooling was a challenge but I passed all my subjects with good marks and I got my matric a few months early.”
Whilst being home schooled, Caroline was also an ardent swimmer. “I trained twice a day and competed in races nearly every weekend. I did open water swimming (3km and 5km)”. It was when she was 18 that a shoulder injury – from over-training – made it difficult for her to keep motivated and positive about swimming. Since last June 2011, she has stopped swimming, and started of her singing career. During this time Caroline is also busy with a course to help out her sister with her swimming school. “Once I have completed the course I will be able to work for her and help her with all the children.”
Her singing career
At this moment Caroline can be found singing at Kenny Gee’s Restaurant here in Rustenburg, every other Friday evening, and can also be found at Rosemary’s Kitchen. It is her passion for music that has driven her to pave her way to a singing career.
“I am constantly singing or humming a tune. It’s always been a part of my life.”
Caroline started pursuing a career in music and singing last year June. And is slowly but surely getting her name out there and picking up more work as a musician locally. Her dream is to one day be able to “write, record and produce” her own CD in the future. “I don’t want to be a singer and not be able to produce and record my own work”. What’s important to her is to make it in the South African music industry and be a recognized and respected artist.
Q&A with Caroline:
What’s your favourite song of all time?
Ah, this is a difficult question to answer. I don’t have a favourite song to be honest! I like all music from rock to folk to country. I don’t like to say what genre I’m into or what type of music I enjoy because it really just depends on the song and whether it makes me feel something or moves me.
How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
Hi, my name is Caroline.
Where can we find usually you?
Well if you want to find me singing the places I sing the most are Kenny Gee’s Restaurant and also Rosemary’s Kitchen. Other than that I am usually found at home or with my boyfriend. Every now and then I can be found out and about around Rustenburg with my friends.
If not a singer what else would you want to become?
I don’t have an answer for this question. I haven’t thought of being anything else. But I know it would have something to do with music. Maybe a backup-dancer for a singer ;) Just kidding – I am a terrible dancer.
Coffee or tea person?
Coffee in the morning and tea before bed. Best of both worlds.
What motivates you?
My love for music motivates me to sing my best at every gig and just be myself with the music. My family motivates me to be the best I can be.
