Hot-air ballooning (and the first ever balloon to take to the sky) started in 1783 and now, 228 years later, you can also experience the feeling of seeing the Pilanesberg or Magaliesberg from the skies. You’ll need:
  1. To book at least 2 weeks in advance. Some air-balloons accommodate up to 12 people
  2. To be taller than 1,2 m – the jump from the basket can be 0,6 meters
  3. To be between the ages of 12 and 70 – if you are agile, you are welcome to join
  4. Binoculars
  5. Camera
  6. To leave your high heels at home, and bring your walking shoes
  7. A hat or cap
  8. Sunscreen – especially between November & February

The duration of the balloon flight:

Depending on which hot-air balloon company you fly with, the trip usually lasts 1 hour.

The package could be tailored to include:

  • Breakfast before flight
  • Game viewing
  • Champagne after flight
  • Game drives
Dress code:

Dress in layers ensure you enjoy the duration of the flight.

Weather and months:

Trips usually take place early in the morning because the stable, cool air is best suited to take off.

Afternoon trips depend on the time of year and the weather on the day, so please check with a tour operator.

Interesting facts about hot-air ballooning:
  • The first passengers on a hot-air balloon were a duck, a rooster and a sheep
  • On 21 November 1783 , the first human attempt was made by Joseph & Etienne Montgolfier, who stayed in the air for a total of 20 minutes
  • The South African Military originally used hot-air balloons for reconnaissance (spying on their enemies).
  • It was in 1969 that South African received its first hot-air balloon.
  • The hot-air balloon basket varies in size and carries between 2 to 18 people.
