10 Things to do in Rustenburg and North West Province
Rustenburg is the fastest growing city in South Africa and is situated at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range in the North West Province. 1. Wild about wildlife – visit a Game/Nature Reserve
We value our wildlife and are proud to have the big 5 on our doorstep in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The Pilanesberg Game reserve is 48 km from Rustenburg and offers self drive routes, game drives and great accommodation to visitors.
Kgaswane Nature Reserve is very popular with Rustenburg cyclists and hikers and has a self drive route for game viewing that is connected to picnic sites and view points.
Enjoy farm activities, game drives or relax next to the campfire with family and friends at Kareekloof Game Farm.
Mountain Sanctuary Park is 33 km from Rustenburg and in the Magaliesberg Mountains. Here you can relax in one of the crystal clear mountain pools and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the natural surroundings. 2. Hiking and MTB trails
Rustenburg has a variety of hiking trails to suit different fitness and skills levels.
The Kgaswane Nature Reserve has the following trials on offer: Vleiramble a 2 km trail, Peglerae trail a 5 km trail, Baviaanskrans Route a 19 km trail and the Summit Route trail of 25 km. For more information on these trails contact 014 533 2050.
The Eagle Cove Trail starts at Kumbagana Game Lodge and is a 2 day 18 km easy to moderate trail. The trail caters for day visitors as well as those wishing to spend the night and walk the full trail. For more information or to book: 012 662 0586/1140 or 014 535 0098.
Kranskloof Hiking Trail is situated close to Sparkling Waters Hotel and Spa. This is a really nice trail with beautiful views of the kloof. Book in advance: 014 535 0014 or 072 463 5574.
The Mountain Sanctuary Grotto Trail in Magaliesburg is ideal for hiking with the whole family. Children enjoy the water pools but should be supervised as there are some dangerous places in the gorges. Camping and caravan sites are available but bookings are essential: 014 534 0114
Mountain bike trails include:
Breedtsnek Road MTB Trails 24 km from Rustenburg. This route challenge endurance and strength as it is a continuous climb for about 4 km with a total climb of 600 m.
Mountain Sanctuary MTB Trails forms part of the Magalies Monster Bike race that takes place every year. Picnic, braai facilities and swimming pool available. Book in advance: 014 534 0114
3. Adventure
For the adventurers there are a variety of activities to choose from. Why not try the Zip 2000 at Sun City? This is one of the longest, highest & fastest zip slides in the world – the ultimate adrenalin ride in NW province. Read more.

The Buffelspoort dam which is about 32 km from Rustenburg is a clean dam and ideal for fishing, skiing, camping or a day visit. Entrance fees are payable.
