Bill McGill – Rustenburg own artist
Rustenburg Artist, Bill Mc Gill was born in Greytown, Natal in 1934. In 1944 the Mc Gill family moved to Rustenburg in the NW Province and Bill was educated at Rustenburg High School and King Edward VII High school in Johannesburg.
Bill has painted in watercolours for fifty seven years and has taught art for forty five years, first at Rustenburg Technical College and later at his own studio. From 1978 until 1995 he was the owner of the well known art gallery, Studio 5, in Rustenburg.
A portion of the world famous Madikwe Game Reserve once belonged to the McGill family and Bill’s love of nature and animals is reflected in his wildlife paintings and drawings.
During the period 1990 to 1992, Bill was a procurement agent for many of the art works for the Lost City and Entertainment Centre at the Sun City resort and sixteen of his own paintings grace the bedrooms of the resort’s hotels. Several of the illustrations of the book “Rustenburg Romance” were done by Bill and, inspired by the stories of Herman Charles Bosman, he sketched and painted the people and old buildings of Groot Marico.
His lovely watercolours are to be found in homes and corporate buildings throughout South Africa, in the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, France, America and Canada. Bill also supplies some of the leading galleries in South Africa with his work.
Bill was voted “artist of the Year” by the North West Vroue Landbou Unie” in 2012.
