De Molen Windmill and De Backery, Edenvale, East Rand

The Dutch bakery called De Backery was established in Edenvale in 1963 and is a well-loved landmark by South Africans and tourists.
Enjoy a variety of delicious pancakes, both sweet and savoury, breakfasts, toasted sandwiches, Dutch pea soup, Dutch traditional meals and a selection of De Backery pies, as well as Douwe Egberts, coffee, tea and cold drinks.
How did Edenvale get a windmill?
In 1996, the owners, the Verhoogt family, wanted to attract attention to their Dutch bakery and decided on creating a replica of the Zeldenrust Molen in Groningen, Northern Holland, over their existing building. The building restrictions and available space limited the project to a 3/4 size copy, but the details are authentic.
A book was bought in Holland describing the restoration of the Zeldenrust Molen. This book contained detailed drawings for this windmill. The building and construction methods were copied from the book by Mr Van den Boogaard, a retired carpenter from Cape Town, who with the help of Mr Jos Weerdenburg, also from Cape Town, and a helper, built the windmill in just under 6 months. The copy windmill was named De Willem as this is a name that is carried by four generations of the Verhoogt family. The buildings in the lane next to the windmill are also in the Dutch style to carry through the whole Dutch theme.
There is seating both inside and outside this lovely windmill. The atmosphere inside is warm and cosy – the inside of the mill is furnished with typical Dutch items and photo displays of the construction.
