Diphofolong Centre

The word Diphofolong is a Sotho word which means “amongst the animals”. The exhibition is in the main office complex of the Voortrekker Monument and consists of 52 animal trophies from South Africa. Amongst others there is a crocodile, a hippopotamus, an ostrich, a giraffe and several types of buck. This permanent exhibition is used for educational nature programmes aimed at school learners. Its aim is to teach learners and visitors about endangered species as well as the continued conservation of our country’s rich heritage. Through physical examples they are able to learn more about the habits of every species and how it adapts to its environment to survive.

Two programmes have been developed. Program one has been developed for primary school learners and covers the syllabus from Grade 4 – 7. The program is split into three parts namely a power-point presentation of one hour concerning the origin of the earth and the place of animals on it; a one hour walk through the site of the Monument to identify certain field characteristics and a conclusion of one hour in the centre where the animals and their behaviour is discussed.

Program two is for senior learners of Grade 8 -10 and is designed on the same basis as program one; it is also based on the syllabus for Natural Sciences. Bookings for this educational program can me made with Dr Arend Posthuma.
