Wonderboom Hiking Trails, Pretoria

Description

Best known for protecting a 1000year-old fig tree (Ficus salicifolia), the reserve also offers various hiking trails to choose from or combine. The shortest route will take the hiker on a journey around the famous “Wonderboom” fig tree. There are also longer trails to choose from namely the Fort trail along the Magaliesberg ridge (a relative height of 1430m) leading to the ruins of the Wonderboom fort as well as a Waterfall trial, both offer majestic views of the surrounding suburban areas.

Hikers can also enjoy the rich birdlife and spot the breeding pair of Black Eagles. In short this is a self-guided network of circular routes.

Depending on the route chosen trails will lead you to the Waterfall, Fort or around the “Wonderboom”.

Wonderboom Interpretive Trail: 0,5 km

Fort Trail: 2,8 km

Waterfall & Cave Trail: 0, 5 km

Joos Becker Guided Trail: 2,7 km

Fort to Waterfall and Cave Trail: 1 km

Alternative Waterfall & Cave Trail: 0,3 km

Depending on the trail chosen duration can vary from 0.5 – 2 hours

Please Note

There is also a longer trail around the mountain to the south which can also be accessed from the Joos Becker caravan park next to the R101. This is a guided trail currently fairly heavily overgrown.  Hikers should be aware that the paths are not sufficiently marked (signposted) but the routes are easy to follow as they lead into one another and can be varied.

Directions

Drive northwards on Paul Kruger Street (R101) and Mansefield Avenue for about 6 to 7km from the city centre. Immediately after the road goes through the gap in the Magaliesberg range turn right onto the M1 and cross the Apies River. The entrance is on the right about 300 metres from the R101.
