Atteridgeville Township Tour

Atteridgeville is a township located on the west of Pretoria and often referred to as the jazz capital of South Africa.

Established in 1939, Atteridgeville is a diverse township with many places of interest and a wide variety of cultures and languages.

Especially well-known for its many restaurants, shebeens and taverns, Atterdigeville is a popular tourist attraction for local as well as international tourists.

Home to many talented jazz artists and jazz lovers alike, Atteridgeville offers a wide variety of entertainment options to music lovers.

One of Atteridgeville’s most popular jazz collector’s clubs is Musiq ‘N Lights – Former Janicky’s, an old house that’s been transformed into a unique party and live music venue. (Situated at 165 Moroe Street. Tel: 078 425 1001.)

Home to the Jazz in the Park festival, the Ga-Mothakga Recreation Resort (Situated in Elias Motswaledii (old Church West) Street. Tel: +27 (0)12 358 6741) is open year-round and offers its guests and day visitors modern swimming pools, bird-watching facilities as well as a picnic area with braai facilities.

The SS Mendi Memorial tombstone, which pays tribute to soldiers who died when the SS Mendi sank during World War 1, is located within this resort.

The Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium, with a capacity of 28,900, is also situated in Atteridgeville.

The stadium is mostly used for football matches and serves as part-time home stadium of Premier Soccer League clubs Supersport United and Mamelodi Sundowns. The national football team of Germany used the stadium as a training venue during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The 64 926m² sized Atlyn Shopping Centre was the first Shopping Centre in Atteridgeville and is situated on the corner of Phudufufu and Nkosa Street.

With 106 shops including Truworths, Mr Price, OK Furniture, KFC, Romans Pizza and more, the open-layout shopping centre is a favourite destination among local residents.

Other tourist attractions include the Mendi Memorial, 2nd World War Plaque, Black Rock House, Ou Stads House and Mrs Moloto’s House.

Atteridgeville is situated south-west of Pretoria CBD and easy accessible by car via Church Street.
