The Wonderboom Nature Reserve, Pretoria

The Reserve is better known for its “Wonderboom” a specimen of Ficus salicifolia, a 1000 year old wild fig tree that grows in the reserve.

Situated in the North of Pretoria and part of the Magaliesburg Mountains the Reserve offers scenic views from the top of the hill and is made up of broad-leaved woodland covering the rocky slopes with some open grasslands.

Hiking

Hiking trails offer scenic views and a cultural experience with a fort at the top of the mountain. At the foot of the hill near the Wonderboom is an important Iron Age site and nearby is one of the best Stone Age sites in the area.

Birding

Trails leading up to the hill of the reserve will make the trip satisfying for Bird Watchers.

There is also a picnic area with braai facilities at the foot of the reserve with large trees and open lawns.

(Entrance to nature reserve will only be allowed until 1 hour before closing time).

Directions

Drive northwards on Paul Kruger Street (R101) and Mansefield Avenue for about 6 to 7km from the city centre. Immediately after the road goes through the gap in the Magaliesberg range turn right onto the M1 and cross the Apies River. The entrance is on the right about 300 metres from the R101.
