Description
A network of trails covers the whole Rietvlei Nature Reserve area, the trails vary in distance which can be used according to the level of fitness of the hiker.
Along the route, hikers will be greeted with various natural as well as cultural features such as British embankments used during the occupation of Pretoria. In short this is a guided, self-catering circular hiking trail with shorter loops.
The 2 day hiking trail starts on Friday afternoon with a 2km hike leading up to the first overnight hut and continues on the Saturday morning 14km to the next overnight hut. Facilities include two overnight rondavels with beds and mattresses, hot and cold water, basic cooking utensils and firewood. The hike is completed on the Sunday with an easy 6km walk ending at the gate of the reserve.

Booking
Bookings are essential for all activities. Bookings for the 21km (two-day) overnight hike from Friday to Sunday afternoon need to be made two weeks in advance.

Directions
On the R21 take the Irene/Rietvleidam off-ramp and turn in an easterly direction (towards Rietvleidam). At the first four-way stop turn right towards Olifantsfontein and the St George’s Hotel. Drive for 1.5km, crossing the Sesmylspruit. On the left is the signboard for the reserve. Turn left and follow the road up the hill to the main gate. Drive past the stone entrance until you get to the offices and entrance gate.
