Pretoria in Pictures: Fauna and Flora
Pretoria has much to offer wildlife photographers, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts and much can be experienced without leaving the city boundaries.
Apart from the magnitude of tree lined streets, most of them Jacarandas, the City of Tshwane also has a great deal of nature reserves and urban parks.
It’s said to be the only city in the world with a big-five game reserve, namely Dinokeng. Pretoria also has one of the largest urban nature reserves namely Rietvlei Nature Reserve and Groenkloof Nature Reserve is the first proclaimed game sanctuary in Africa (1895). The city also boasts with one of the youngest and best preserved meteorite craters in the world at Tswaing and don’t forget the 1000 year old Wonderboom tree at Wonderboom Nature Reserve.
The National Zoo in Pretoria is the largest zoo in the country and hosts in excess of 600 000 visitors every year. Animal enclosures are very large and great effort is made to provide the utmost care for the animals. The zoo is also a well-respected research facility and takes part in successful breeding programmes
So whether it’s hiking, birding, horse-riding, mountain biking, fishing or merely having a picnic in an urban park, it’s easy to get up close with nature, right here in our city.
