Kruger House Museum
The Kruger Museum is situated inside the The Kruger house, the historical Pretoria residence of the former President of the South African Republic (Transvaal), Paul Kruger.
Built in 1884, the house has been refurbished to recreate the ambience of the period of when the President lived there.
One of the first in Pretoria to be lit by electricity, the Kruger house was built by architect Tom Claridge and builder Charles Clark and was not an official residence but Paul Kruger and his family’s private home. Later the house was used as headquarters of the South African Constabulary and then as a private hotel.
The museum was opened in 1934 and declared a National Monument in 1937.
Kruger memorabilia and some original furnishings that belonged to the president and his family can be seen in the museum.
Important memorabilia and furniture pieces in the house include a bronze-gilded eagle given to President Kruger by a group of Irish-Americans, an oil painting of Kruger by Adamson, a Vierkleur Transvaal flag and Lions statues given to Kruger by the mining magnate Barney Barnato.
Kruger was president from the 9th of May 1883 to the 10th of September 1900. He is particularly well known for his leading role in the Transvaal War against Britain in 1889-188.
The Kruger House Museum is situated opposite the Kruger Church, a building with cultural historical significance. The Church was declared a national heritage monument in 1979.
