Fort Klapperkop
Fort Klapperkop was the third fort erected after former President Paul Kruger of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek commanded the constructing of forts to protect Pretoria, shortly before the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).
One of Pretoria’s most beautiful forts, Fort Klapperkop has been restored and arranged as a museum featuring permanent exhibitions the Anglo-Boer War.
Completed on the 18th of January 1898, the Fort was surrounded by a moat and had a drawbridge at the front, a telephone and a water reservoir which received water from the Fountains Valley. The moat was never filled with water.
Fort Klapperkop, along with the three other forts, was ever fully armoured.
Apart from the military museum other things to see at Fort Klapperkop includes a statue of a soldier holding a rifle, in memory of all members of the South African Defence Force who lost their lives during service.
A stable complex, old steam locomotive and the last tram used in Pretoria can also be viewed at the site.
Picnic, braai and event facilities are available, and guided tours and education school programmes can be arranged.
The Fort is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays and public holidays.
