SOAPkidz visit Groenkloof Nature Reserve
SOAPkidz joined the Groenkloof nature reserve team Sunday 1 February 2015 to help eradicate invasive plants. The girls from the Tshwane home of Hope had great fun whilst giving back to nature.
SOAPkidz is a non-profit organisation with the aim to create environmental awareness, promote nature conservation, teach life skills, while doing fun activities among the underprivileged, abused and neglected children.
The girls’s spirit was high and their singing could be heard from a distance. After assisting the staff of Groenkloof Nature Reserve with the eradication of pompoms, they were introduced to one of the horses. Most of them were petrified in the beginning, but after brushing the horses, they could not wait to go for a ride.
It’s pure magic when kids and nature meet
Some of the girls’ comments afterwards.
‘First of all, I want to thank SOAPkidz for this opportunity, and it was fun picking the pompoms. I also enjoyed chilling with the horse. In my own words, this was an epic day out!’ Gemielle
‘Today was the most adventurous day of my life. We chopped pompoms which are plants that affect other useful plants. The most awesome thing was that I had the best time ever and was able to touch a horse and brush its hair. We were singing the whole way on our journey and had so much fun.’ Josephine
‘I enjoyed everything we did today, cutting pompoms and I know more about it and where it came from. We walked through tall grass and saw plants I have never seen before.’ Jael
‘Thank you for bringing us here. Just to have fun with you and the nice part was when I concurred my fear and when I touched the horse and brushed it, before that we saw a male ostrich. Also the white flowers were so pretty’ Vicky
A person’s outlook on life is generally based on their upbringing and what they are taught at home. A lot of children are not privileged to come from a happy and fulfilled childhood and therefore their outlook is somewhat distorted, from where they become adults who have a warped sense of life.
We believe that all adults can make a small contribution to a child’s life. We believe that by just showing them that you care enough about them, to teach them something, you are already showing them that they are worth something, and that alone is a step in the right direction.
