Who We Are

METT Centre was established in 1996 and registered as an NPO in 1998.

The organization was established in a response to the needs of inner city children in Pretoria after the transition in government. The inner city was rapidly changing in demographics and there was a sharp increase of families with children moving into the inner city space. Crime increased exponentially and children were often times the victims.

Welfare services were overwhelmed with this change and they were no longer able to provide therapeutic support to the children and families as they were mostly dealing with crisis services.The schools were transitioning to larger numbers of children and more diverse cultures.

METT Centre stepped in to address this need by offering school based quality therapeutic services to children and families in need.

The METT Centre staff is a team of highly motivated, skilled therapists and support staff. The employee compliment of the organisation comprise of 21 paid staff members and 4-6 regular volunteers.

METT centre strives to reach the following outcomes through the 7 step intervention model:

1) Improve the functioning of the child – short term: relieving the emotional pain and mitigate trauma responses, medium term: develop positive coping mechanisms, build resilience in the child & improving behaviour, long term: enable the child to maximally benefit from the educational environment & reach their potential.

 2) Improve the functioning of the family – short term: improve the understanding of child’s needs and experiences by parent, medium term: improve parental skills & address difficulties in family’s functioning through family therapy, long term: restore & improve the family’s cohesion to be a secure and safe environment for the child.

 3) Improve the functioning of the school – short term: improve access to support services to teachers, medium: reduce conflict between teachers & children, long term: improve wellness of school

Therapies, camps and projects by METT Centre:

Individual therapy – Assessment of children and determining their needs, developing an individual therapy plan and commencing with therapy programme (1-6, 6-16 sessions or longer term therapy; 297 children 2202 sessions per year).

Parental guidance & family therapy – Family therapy are provided at the Mett Centre offices at the schools with the children and parents based on the needs of the family (96 family therapy sessions p/a). 

Therapeutic group work – Involving the child in an existing group work programme developed around a specific topic such as overcoming sexual abuse, dealing with aggression, grief and bereavement, life skills training or developing as a teenager (391 learners and 38 groups per year = 152 sessions).

Adventure camps – children go on an adventure camps each quater to build confidence and be exposed to new activities which challenge them to change their perception of themselves (16 sessions 60 children).

Community outreach – primary prevention groups for Grade 7 learners in preparation for high school.

Socialisation groups – Involving the child in fun groups aimed at normalizing their childhood experience and promoting positive peer interactions. The groups include ‘big brotha’, ‘big sista’ groups; mentoring children to have a positive view of their future, art or cooking groups promoting creativity and good eating habits.
