Raygun Killing: NSPCA Moves Forward with Charges

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has officially concluded its investigation into the brutal killing of Raygun, a male chacma baboon, which occurred on 6 February 2025. Despite numerous challenges—including obstruction, evidence tampering, and community reluctance to cooperate—the NSPCA remained resolute in its pursuit of justice.
A Challenging Investigation
The case was fraught with difficulties from the outset. A pathology report on Raygun’s remains confirmed that he had suffered multiple injuries before his death. However, gathering further evidence proved difficult due to local superstitions surrounding baboons and fears of retaliation. Many in the community were hesitant to provide statements, which significantly delayed progress.
Despite these obstacles, the NSPCA pressed forward, meticulously compiling all available evidence. The case was officially handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Delmas on 20 March 2025, ensuring that those responsible would face legal consequences.
Legal Proceedings Underway
With the case now in SAPS’ hands, an Investigating Officer has been appointed to gather further statements and proceed with the necessary legal steps. However, due to legal constraints, no information about the accused can be made public until a court hearing takes place.
The NSPCA has vowed to continue monitoring the case closely, ensuring that due process is followed and that justice is served.
A Call for Justice
The brutal nature of Raygun’s death has sparked widespread public outrage. “We understand the frustration and anger of those who seek justice for Raygun, and we share it,” said Chief Inspector Douglas Wolhuter, Manager of the NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit. “This was not an easy case—it was met with resistance at every turn. Despite the many obstacles, the NSPCA remained the driving force behind this investigation, ensuring that the case was pursued.”

Standing Against Animal Cruelty
The NSPCA has emphasized that Raygun’s case is about more than just one baboon—it is a stand against cruelty and a demand for stronger animal protection measures. The organization has thanked the public for their ongoing support and urged anyone with further information to come forward.
Justice for Raygun is not just about holding perpetrators accountable—it is about ensuring that no animal suffers a similar fate in the future.
