This is a fresh pizza spot in the Pretoria CBD that sells cheesy, chicken, porky, veggie and peri-liver pizza cones from R21.50 to R28.50 complete with a drink of your choice at no extra charge. Now pizza has existed as round shaped flat bread with toppings since the Neolithic era, so it is fascinating to find pizza moulded in a cone and still taste magnifico, like the inventors of pizza in Italy would say.
People love the chicken cone; we’ve had a lot of repeat customers…
So how is Pizza in a Cone prepared?
“Everything from mixing flour for the dough, making cones with a cone maker and the fillings are done from scratch every morning,” said Boipelo, the manager of Pizza in a Cone.
On the menu to satisfy curious taste buds is a porky flavoured cone which is really easy make. First she fills the freshly baked cone with tomato sauce, cheese, pork ingredients then again with cheese before shoving it in the cone oven to bake for about 5-7 minutes depending on how brown you’d like your pizza cone.
The idea is a novelty, first thing they want to know is how we make it…
“We left the glass design for Pizza in a Cone so that people see what we are making and how we make it, there’s an element of intrigue even though you know what you are getting,” said the owner of Pizza in a Cone, Xola Qubu.
Pizza in a Cone brief background:
While travelling in Italy with his wife Dudu for a different business venture, they came across a pizza cup restaurant which they obviously thought was brilliant because 7 years later when Xola decided that he wanted to branch out into the food industry, they dug into their savings to self-fund Pizza in a Cone.
“We spent time researching if it will sell and if customers would get full,” he said. In January this year, pizza cone machines arrived from China and the store has been open for 2 weeks to date. “People love the chicken cone; we’ve had a lot of repeat customers. The idea is a novelty, first thing they want to know is how we make it,” laughed Xola
Big plans for Pizza in a Cone:
Xola mentions that they plan to make their own machines seeing that they will be growing to a franchise that will not only be limited to a small kiosk. The vision for Pizza in a Cone is to have a pizza cup mobile truck, pizza cup café where customers can sit down, pizza cup platters for events and pizza cup air that will be served on domestic airlines.

Business ventures such as Pizza in a Cone are what will change the city of Tshwane in time like “transforming old buildings for business,” he said.
Open Monday to Friday from 7am until 5pm, it is worth popping in at Pizza in a Cup. Find them on Facebook as PizzaCup_SA and @PizzaCup_SA on Twitter for more information.
