We are an Innovative City
The City of Tshwane’s free WiFi network has been growing well and it’s about to get much bigger, with three new services. Adding to the bouquet of services already available, internet users can now also access Wi-Fi voice calling, instant messaging, and video on demand services.
The project forms part of non-profit organisation Project Isizwe’s free Wi-Fi services, which are available across the city in areas such as the CBD, Mamelodi, Soshanguve and Atteridgeville.
Tshwane Wi-Fi Voice is a mobile application that enables users to call each other and the City’s customer care line at no cost when connected to the Tshwane Free Wi-Fi service.
Tshwane Wi-Fi Chat enables the City to push messages to users and to receive real-time comments and feedback. It also serves as a mechanism for users to log queries and complaints about service delivery.
Tshwane Wi-Fi Drive-In is a video-on-demand service that will be enabled at specific Tshwane Wi-Fi locations. A selection of the latest Hollywood blockbusters will be available at these locations for users to watch on their devices over weekends.
Executive Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said that this service will get young people off the streets and keep them busy enough to not cause trouble. At present, WiFi Drive In is only available in select areas such as Fountains Park in Fountains Valley, Die Draai in Bronkhorstspruit and Dinokeng Theme Park.
‘Wi-Fi Drive Ins’ are expected to be launched for each region of Tshwane during 2016; users can then watch movies in the WiFi Drive Inn areas.
