Waste collection back to normal – Tshwane metro
The Tshwane metro said it was addressing a two-week rubbish bin collection backlog because of a strike by workers that has left residents frustrated.
“We have been servicing areas like the Pretoria CBD, at unusual times such as late at night,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
In addition to the strike, one of the metro’s core service delivery tenders to lease vehicles such as refuse removal trucks also expired two weeks ago.
“Each time there was waste interruptions in the metro, there was bound to be a backlog that needed addressing,” he said.
Mashigo said bins were not collected in some areas because the metro had been attending to other suburbs and townships that had been facing a dire need for waste collection.
He said it had not just been household collections hampered as businesses and dumping sites had also faced issues.
He said the Tshwane staff in the waste department had been attending to such area, “which left us overstretched”.
