The Mooikloof Smart City is progressing Despite Issues
The Mooikloof Smart City project in Pretoria is progressing despite pending government reimbursements.
The Mooikloof Smart City, a flagship “green mega city” development east of Pretoria, is advancing steadily despite outstanding government reimbursements. In a recent site inspection, DA Gauteng’s Shadow MEC for Human Settlements, Mervyn Cirota, alongside provincial spokesperson Evert du Plessis, praised the successful completion of the project’s first phase—including main road construction and initial housing clusters—highlighting its role in bridging the “missing middle” housing gap and creating local employment opportunities.
Conceived by President Ramaphosa in 2020 as one of 62 Strategic Integrated Projects under South Africa’s post-Covid-19 recovery plan, Mooikloof spans over 200 hectares.
With an estimated value exceeding R84 billion, it will ultimately deliver more than 50 000 sectional-title units alongside retail precincts, schools, offices and other amenities. Targeted at South Africans earning too much for fully subsidised homes yet unable to secure conventional mortgages, the development promises substantial infrastructure uplift and long-term economic stimulation in the region.
