Tuks’ Comeback Effort Falls Short, but gains Bonus Points
Tuks coach, Dewey Swartbooi, had high praise for his loosehead prop, MJ Nel, after his excellent performance on Monday night against the Ikeys in Cape Town.
Tuks suffered a narrow 36–29 defeat in Cape Town against Ikeys, but the two bonus points earned could prove pivotal in the Varsity Cup playoffs. Despite a challenging start that saw Ikeys score early and build a 12–0 lead, Tuks fought back to narrow the halftime gap to 26–22. However, persistent errors and a premature shift into catch-up mode allowed Ikeys to maintain their advantage, a point of regret for Tuks’ coach, Dewey Swartbooi.
Tuks’ Comeback Effort Falls Short, but Bonus Points Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
Swartbooi expressed frustration over missed opportunities—citing defensive lapses, inconsistent lineout execution, and a critical penalty kick error in the match’s final moments. Yet, there were bright spots: emerging player MJ Nel, nicknamed “Dominee” for his off-field pursuits, proved to be a formidable force in the scrums, while captain Dillion Smith’s leadership shone from the first minute. Additionally, David Engongo stepped up impressively to fill in at lock, displaying seasoned first-team composure.
With Maties as the only unbeaten team at 15 points and both Shimlas and Ikeys close behind, Tuks’ bonus points will be a crucial asset as the tournament progresses toward the playoffs.
