Former Springbok Wing Cornal Hendricks Dies at 37, The South African rugby community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of former Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks, who passed away suddenly on Wednesday at the age of 37, reportedly due to a massive heart attack.
Hendricks made his Test debut for the Springboks in 2014, going on to earn 12 caps and scoring five tries. At the domestic level, he represented Boland, the Cheetahs, and later the Bulls, where he became a beloved figure both on and off the field.
In 2016, his promising career took a devastating turn when he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition shortly after signing with Western Province and the Stormers. A planned move to French Top 14 club Toulon also fell through, and at just 27, Hendricks was forced into early retirement.
Yet, in 2019, against all odds, he made a courageous return to the game with the Bulls. Over five inspirational seasons, he made 115 appearances and scored 34 tries, becoming a symbol of resilience, hope, and the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity.
“Many people were shocked and saddened when his career was cut short in 2015,” said Bulls director of rugby Jake White.
“When the opportunity arose to bring him back, he embraced it wholeheartedly and made the most of every moment. His journey back inspired not only his teammates but also the entire South African rugby community.
It was a privilege and an honour to coach Cornal. He was a role model, a man whose joy for life was contagious. Rugby has lost one of its truly special souls.”
Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone paid tribute to Hendricks’ impact beyond the field:

Born on 18 April 1988 in Paarl, Western Cape, Hendricks’ journey from humble beginnings to international rugby stardom is a testament to his resilience and determination. He began his rugby career with the Boland Cavaliers, making his professional debut in 2008. His early promise led to selection for the South Africa Sevens team, where he honed his skills and showcased his versatility.
