Springboks’ Squad Revealed as Bulls Vow URC Redemption

South African rugby is gearing up for an exciting season with major developments on both the club and international fronts. The Vodacom Bulls, led by Jake White, are determined to bounce back after a tough URC final defeat, while Rassie Erasmus has named a strong Springbok squad, featuring a mix of experienced players and new talent, for the upcoming internationals against Ireland and Portugal.
Jake White’s Bulls Look Ahead
Jake White, the head coach of the Vodacom Bulls, expressed his profound disappointment following the team’s 21-16 loss to the Glasgow Warriors in the URC final at Loftus Versfeld. The Bulls had initially taken a 13-0 lead but could not maintain their advantage, marking their second consecutive URC final defeat after losing to the DHL Stormers in 2022.
White acknowledged the significant gap in experience between the Bulls and their opponents, noting that every player on the Glasgow bench was an international. He emphasized the need for patience as the young Bulls team continues to grow. “I’m unhappy. I’m helluva disappointed. We missed an opportunity tonight,” White said. “We will be back. I’ve already marked when we play Glasgow away. I already know the date.”
The absence of seasoned fullback Willie le Roux, due to concussion, was a notable setback. Devon Williams filled in admirably, but the Bulls missed Le Roux’s game management and attacking prowess. White remains optimistic about the team’s future, urging fans to trust the process as young talents like Elrigh, Cameron, and David Kriel gain valuable experience.

Springbok Squad Announcement
Siya Kolisi leads a formidable Springbok squad featuring four uncapped players for the upcoming series against Ireland. Rassie Erasmus named a 39-man squad, including returning stars and newcomers, for the two-Test series against Ireland and a solitary Test against Portugal.
Kolisi, back after missing the Wales Test, joins a squad bolstered by the return of Cheslin Kolbe, Lukhanyo Am, Handre Pollard, and Jasper Wiese. Notably, Vodacom Bulls players Johan Grobbelaar, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Sharks’ Phepsi Buthelezi, and Lions’ Morne van den Berg earn their first call-ups.
Erasmus has yet to confirm whether Kolisi will captain the side against Ireland. The squad, comprising 22 forwards and 17 backline players, showcases depth and talent, with Erasmus set to announce the captain closer to the series.
Injuries have ruled out key players, including Steven Kitshoff and Lood de Jager, but Erasmus expressed confidence in the squad’s depth and versatility. “We have enough cover with players like Arendse, Kolbe, and Am available for selection,” he noted.
Looking Forward
The convergence of these narratives—the Bulls’ resolve and the Springboks’ preparation—sets the stage for a thrilling period in South African rugby. Jake White’s focus on developing young talent at the Bulls aligns with Erasmus’s blend of seasoned players and new faces in the Springbok squad. Both teams embody a spirit of resilience and ambition, ready to take on their respective challenges with determination and skill.
As the Bulls aim for redemption in the next URC season and the Springboks prepare to defend their standing against top international opponents, South African rugby fans have much to anticipate. The journey ahead promises intense matches, new stars emerging, and seasoned players showcasing their prowess, all contributing to the rich tapestry of South African rugby.
