SA cool on home ice
South Africa had a less than perfect start at the recent Ice Hockey World Championships Division III at the GrandWest Ice Arena, placing fifth, with Deen Magmoed being named the South African player of the tournament.
Western Province was well represented in the national team with Andre Marais (Cape Town), Uthman Samaai (Newlands) and Jean-Michel van Doesburgh (Pinelands) all playing a role.
“We did not start off that well, losing against Bulgaria 4-0 in our first game. Bulgaria was seeded second in this division with us being seeded in at the fifth spot, so the chances of us winning the first game against a stronger team for the opening game were expected [to be small].
