RunForHope with Bennie Roux is coming to Pretoria
“As an ambassador, I want to encourage the community to come and enjoy the day with us to raise funds for victims.”
#RunForHope, for the benefit of AfriForum’s victim support fund, is coming to Pretoria this year.
It will take place on Saturday, November 6, at the Voortrekker Monument in Eeufees Road.
The purpose of the #RunForHope running and cycling fun day is to cover miles for the benefit of the support fund.
This unit focuses on assisting victims of farm attacks.
In addition to practical assistance such as food and clothing for victims, the unit also provides assistance with taking statements, supporting the crime scene, cleaning up crime scenes, assistance during court appearances, and psychological assistance to victims after their traumatic experiences.
Ultramarathon athlete Bennie Roux, who was named ambassador of the project in 2019, will be back in action this year.
“The reason I became part of the project was that my family and friends were involved in farm attacks.
“I grew up on a farm in Reitz in the Free State and farmers are close to my heart.
“Since farm murders have increased, I decided I want to do something and give back to the farming community to create awareness,” said Roux.
Roux will participate in the 10km cycling, but he will also run with a team in the VAT5 division.
AfriForum trauma support unit launched the #RunForHope project in 2019 to create funds and exposure for the victim support fund.
Due to donations and sponsorships, more than R85 000 was raised for this fund, as well as R60 000 in sponsorships that made the #RunForHope possible.
“The 2019 project kicked off in the Free State and last year we braved 120km between farms in the Eastern Cape. Last October, we also made a stop in the North West.
“As an ambassador, I want to encourage the community to come and enjoy the day with us to raise funds for victims,” he said.
The VAT5 category involves a team of five members who can run on the 5km route from 07:00 to 19:00 as many times as possible.
Prizes will be awarded to the first women’s, men’s and mixed teams.
Each team arranges their own sponsors and the costs will once again go as a donation towards AfriForum’s trauma unit.
