Rookie Secures First Victory at Altron Big Easy Tour
In a thrilling turn of events at the Waterkloof golf course last week, Benoni’s Reece McKain, a relative newcomer to the local professional golf scene, claimed his maiden Altron Big Easy Tour title. Despite facing a three-shot deficit, McKain rallied in the final round, carding a 70 to finish 11-under-par at Waterkloof Golf Club and secure a one-stroke victory.
The competition intensified as Royal Cape Golf Club’s Samuel Simpson and early leader Philip Geerts vied for the win in the closing stretch. Even Conner McKenzie, initially in contention, slipped to fourth place in Pretoria this week.
Reflecting on his pivotal moments, McKain highlighted the eighth hole where he faced a challenging situation but turned it around with a remarkable shot resulting in a hole-out. This momentum proved crucial to his triumph.
McKain’s round began with a bogey but quickly rebounded with a birdie on the next hole. Despite facing setbacks, he showcased mental fortitude, responding to each challenge with resilience. McKain’s birdies on the 12th, 14th, and the final hole contributed to his well-deserved victory.
Turning professional in April of the previous year, McKain earned Altron Big Easy Tour playing privileges after narrowly missing out on a Sunshine Tour card at Qualifying School. Competing in his rookie season on the Sunshine Tour development circuit, McKain faced the high standard of golf, often competing against multiple Sunshine Tour winners.
With this victory, McKain climbed to 20th on the Order of Merit, positioning himself within the top 50 players eligible for The Play-Offs at Centurion Country Club in a few weeks. The upcoming 10th tournament at Benoni Country Club holds special significance for McKain, and he aims to achieve back-to-back wins on his home course.
