Proteas captain Temba Bavuma highlights their Performance
Proteas captain Temba Bavuma highlighted the strong performance of the batting lineup as a significant positive from the rain-affected draw against the West Indies in the first Test in Trinidad. The Proteas were left disappointed after the West Indies held on for a draw on the final day, ending the match at 201-5 after 56 overs.
Despite the weather challenges, which saw seven sessions washed out, the Proteas declared their second innings at 173-3 just before lunch on the final day, attempting to create a slim opportunity for a result.
Reflecting on the match, Bavuma said, “We would have preferred more time because losing seven sessions makes it tough. We did our best with what we had, but ultimately, the weather prevented what could have been a really competitive game.”
In the second innings, Tristan Stubbs made a significant impact by scoring his first half-century in Test cricket, a quickfire 68 off 50 balls. His aggressive approach allowed Bavuma to declare and try to push for a win.
Bavuma also contributed significantly with the bat, top-scoring with 86 in the first innings, which saw the Proteas post 357. Opener Tony de Zorzi impressed in his debut at the top of the order, scoring 78 and 45 across both innings.
“The way we approached the second innings, with positive intent and a focus on creating as much time as possible, was encouraging,” Bavuma noted. “Stubbs’ fifty was especially exciting, considering he didn’t score in the first innings. His confidence and willingness to express himself are a testament to his character, and he’ll only grow from here.”
He added, “Tony also backed up his first innings performance with more runs. Overall, there were many positives to take from this match, especially given the long break since we last played. There’s a lot to build on moving forward.”
The second and final Test of the series is set to begin on Thursday in Providence, Guyana.
