His nicknames — “The KO Kid” and “2 Guns” — reflect not just his power, but his precision.
From Rugby Dreams to Boxing Realities
Born in 1992 and raised in Johannesburg, Lerena attended King Edward VII High School, where he played first-team rugby. Inspired by legends like Brian Habana, he once dreamed of rugby stardom — until boxing stole his heart.
“I started training at 15,” he recalls. “Before school, I’d hit the gym. By 19, I knew boxing was my future.”
His early boxing idols? Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis — especially Holyfield, who climbed through weight classes to become a champion.
Power, Precision, and the Lessons of Loss
Lerena’s style is fast-paced and strategic. While known for his knockout power, he credits timing and technique over brute force.
“Good timing makes good power,” he explains. “It’s precision. They go hand in hand.”
His training regimen is intense: five days a week, sometimes three sessions a day. But it’s not just physical — Lerena embraces the mental toll of defeat.
“Losses suck,” he admits. “But they don’t define you. You learn, you grow, and you move forward.”
Beyond the Ring: A Champion Who Serves
Outside boxing, Lerena is a qualified paramedic and licensed helicopter pilot — driven by a desire to help.
“There’s no greater feeling than saving a life,” he says. “I wanted people to say, ‘The champion was one of us.’”
He’s pragmatic about balance: “Success demands sacrifice. Balance is for the circus.”
Words to Live By
Lerena’s advice to aspiring athletes is simple but powerful:
“Through adversity comes strength. Never give up.”
His story is a testament to that philosophy — a reminder that champions aren’t born, they’re built.
