Oom Paul at Church Square Shows Support for the Boks
Members of the Church Square Revival Project (CSRP) who are fervent supporters of the Springboks recently united to adorn the statue of Paul Kruger on Church Square in a striking display of support.
A prominent landmark in Tshwane received a vibrant makeover courtesy of local designers and entrepreneurs, just in time for the Rugby World Cup Final.
The renowned statue of Paul Kruger, situated at the heart of Church Square, will sport the distinctive green and gold colors for the first time. It stands proudly behind Siya Kolisi’s Springbok team in their quest to secure the Webb Ellis trophy.
Jeffrey Wapnick, the managing director of City Property, which owns several buildings surrounding the Square, spearheaded this initiative. He expressed, “We aimed to foster a sense of unity, bringing the nation together as the team strives to retain the Rugby World Cup and potentially secure a historic fourth victory. Our passion for the sport runs deep. Saturday’s game marks the ultimate challenge for the Boks as they seek to keep the Webb Ellis Cup. Our Capital City is fervent about rugby, and as a diverse nation, we demonstrate our support in various creative ways. Covering Oom Paul in our national team’s colors was the perfect tribute.”
The idea to deck the iconic statue in green and gold also stemmed from the efforts of the Capital Collective, a city development non-profit organization.
Wapnick emphasized that this installation not only stands as a testament to the nation’s support for the Boks but also highlights Church Square in Tshwane as a must-visit tourist destination.
