Jovan van Vuuren’s Journey from Setback to Soaring Heights
Jovan van Vuuren, one of South Africa’s most improved athletes, faced a significant setback last year due to a serious injury. However, he is eagerly anticipating achieving remarkable heights in 2024.
While it might seem premature to contemplate New Year’s resolutions and set goals for the upcoming year, the former SA long jump champion is already planning his trajectory. As a master’s student at Tuks, Van Vuuren aims to make a substantial impact in 2024, specifically in the long jump. If successful, he stands a chance to secure a medal at the World Indoor Championships, reclaim the South African long jump title, and participate in the Paris Olympic Games.
Van Vuuren’s early goal-setting is rooted in a profound realization this year that a sports career can be abruptly halted. In March, his doctor conveyed the disheartening news that the likelihood of him ever competing at the highest level again was nearly zero due to the precarious state of his right hamstring tendon. The potential consequence was a necessary operation with no guarantees and the risk of a lifelong limp.
Determined not to abandon his dreams, Van Vuuren initiated an intensive rehabilitation program with the support of key figures like Neil du Plessis (strength and conditioning coach), Greyling Viljoen (clinical psychologist), Steven Ball (TuksSport Director & Acting CEO of hpc), and the entire teams at Power2Health and PVM.
In July, he received the uplifting news of his tendon’s healing progress. Two months ago, he was given the green light to resume track training and even resumed jumping. This experience has left a lasting impression on Van Vuuren, emphasizing the importance of never taking anything for granted.
“For me, 2023 will always be the ‘what-if’ year. I can’t help but wonder what I could have achieved if I had not been injured. The one thing I now understand about sports is that there is no tomorrow. That’s why, in 2024, I will live in the moment. I will give 100% to achieve every goal I set,” expressed Van Vuuren, who secured a bronze medal during the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
