Centurion Golfer Wins South African Amateur Championship
Charl Barnard from Centurion Country Club secured the South African Amateur Championship title following an exciting 36-hole match play final against Cameron Mukherjee from Great Britain at Humewood Golf Club. Barnard triumphed over Mukherjee with a score of 5/3, earning both the victory and a place in the esteemed Investec South African Open.
Initially, Barnard faced challenges, losing the first hole on a blustery, rainy day in Port Elizabeth, but he swiftly turned the tide by winning the next four holes. Mukherjee fought back with birdies and an eagle, narrowing the deficit to just one down. Nonetheless, Barnard’s eagles on the 15th and 17th holes allowed him to establish a solid advantage.
Mukherjee persisted in his efforts during the second round of 18 holes, but Barnard held his ground, increasing his lead with wins on the 11th, 14th, and 15th holes, ultimately finishing the match.
