Bulls Scramble to Strengthen Defense After Rocky URC Start
The Bulls are facing an early-season defensive crisis in the United Rugby Championship, with coach Johan Ackermann acknowledging that urgent adjustments are needed after conceding 14 tries in just three games. The team has allowed a total of 99 points, prompting sharp criticism from within the union.
Bulls president Willem Strauss did not mince words, describing one recent outing as “arguably our worst performance since joining the URC.” He highlighted the team’s lack of cohesion and intensity, calling for immediate improvement.
Ackermann, however, is approaching the situation with a message of accountability and unity. Speaking to the media, he likened the team’s current struggles to challenges faced by families. “Every family has tough times; they fight, they face setbacks. The same applies here. We are a unit—players, staff, everyone. No one is hiding, and no one is taking the easy way out,” he said.
The Bulls coach emphasized that losing is never intentional, and responsibility lies with the team to address the flaws exposed so far. “Tackle dominance is crucial. Too often, players have to cover for each other, which creates a ripple effect. Preparation was not perfect—injuries, numbers, contact readiness—but now we have to catch up and tighten our defence quickly.”
The recent loss to Ulster was particularly painful, with four tries conceded—three while the Bulls were a man down—highlighting defensive lapses on simple plays like kick-throughs, pick-and-goes, and mauls. “Strong defence wins games,” Ackermann said. “We will continue to work relentlessly to improve, from coaches to players.”
Looking ahead, the Bulls face a challenging stretch with away fixtures against Connacht in Ireland and Glasgow in Scotland, before returning home to face the Lions. Ackermann insists that defensive focus will be non-negotiable if the team hopes to reverse its early-season misfortunes.
