Bullish Momentum as Louw Aims High
The return of scrum maestro Wilco Louw to South Africa has injected new life into the Vodacom Bulls’ formidable set piece, while simultaneously fueling his aspirations for a Springboks comeback.
In a commanding Round 6 showdown at Loftus Versfeld, Louw played a pivotal role as the Bulls dominated Connacht, propelling them to the third spot in the 2023-24 Vodacom URC standings. Despite the continuity of the venue this Saturday, the upcoming clash against the Sharks holds a more personal significance for Louw.
Originating from the DHL Stormers, where he fine-tuned his skills alongside Springboks double World Cup winners Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe, Louw’s rugby odyssey spans eight years and now finds him at the heart of the Bulls’ scrum resurgence. His robust thigh muscles are a testament to his scrummaging prowess, a linchpin in the Bulls’ successful campaign this season, orchestrated by the astute director of rugby, Jake White.
A paragon of stability in the set piece, Louw has evolved into an indispensable asset for The Herd in the URC, where the scrum serves as a battlefield for supremacy in various aspects of the game. Notably, in a standout performance against Cardiff in Round 4, Louw led by example, playing the full 80 minutes. His defensive prowess earned him the well-deserved Man of the Match accolade, showcasing an unwavering commitment to the Bulls’ cause.
