Solomon Mahlangu Square gets R49 million facelift
The newly renovated Solomon Mahlangu Freedom Square in Mamelodi was officially reopened by the Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the Honourable Molebatsi Bopape, and the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, on Monday, 27 July 2015. The square commemorates the struggle heroes and heroines who lost their lives fighting for freedom.
The square was named after Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu, a prominent ANC cadre who was hanged in April 1979.
During the first phase of renovation, the City revamped the square at a cost of R49 million. It was upgraded with the purpose of creating job opportunities and serving as a tourist attraction. The Executive Mayor indicated that the second phase is currently underway. This phase will consist of museum, theatre and other modern features. Solomon Mahlangu Freedom Square will not be just about the park – people will also learn about the history and heritage of Mamelodi and Tshwane in general.
During his address, Councillor Ramokgopa stressed that the square must be respected and taken care of by members of the community because it belongs to them.
The Mahlangu family who attended the event were represented by Chief Lucas Mahlangu, who told the audience that Kalushi was a brave man who fought against the apartheid regime and in doing so played a role in the establishment of our democracy, therefore he must be respected and honoured.
Solomon Mahlangu Square will only be open between 09:00 and 17:00 for safety reasons.
