Severe Weather Alert: Level 5 Rain Warning Issued for PTA
A Level 5 rain warning has been issued for Pretoria, with the South African Weather Services (SAWS) urging residents to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas as heavy rains are expected to cause significant disruption.
On Monday, Pretoria will experience severe rainfall, leading to widespread flooding in both formal and informal settlements. Major roads could be submerged or closed, causing extensive traffic disruptions across the city and potentially isolating some communities from essential services.
SAWS warns that flash floods are likely, particularly along fast-flowing streams and rivers, and vulnerable areas may also face mudslides, rockfalls, and soil erosion. The risk to safety is heightened for those in mud-based or makeshift structures.
In light of the hazardous conditions, residents are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors. SAWS emphasizes that conditions are dangerous to life and property.
Key Safety Tips:
- Seek higher ground if flooding occurs, but avoid sheltering under trees or tall structures, as they may attract lightning.
- Refrain from crossing flooded roads or driving through fast-moving water, which could sweep vehicles away.
- Move valuables in buildings to areas above the expected flood level to protect them.
- Avoid outdoor activities like fishing or golf, as both fishing rods and golf clubs are excellent conductors of electricity during thunderstorms.
If you are caught in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it immediately and move to higher ground. “Avoid crossing rivers or swollen streams, especially where the water level is above your ankles,” advises SAWS.
