Safety tips to heed during load-shedding
The City of Tshwane, like any other City in the country has been experiencing power cuts due to load-shedding that is being implemented by the power utility, Eskom. Various load-shedding schedules are announced daily and the Tshwane Emergency Services Department would like to share vital safety tips to help ensure residents stay safe during load-shedding periods.
Below are the tips that residents are urged to adhere to in order to be safe:
- Switch off all electrical appliances during a power cuts
- Always remember to switch off the stove.
- No gas appliances should be placed near heating agents, stoves, heaters or elements.
- Invest in emergency lights that will switch on during a power cuts
- Make sure that you have a fully charged torch and have torches accessible to children (where possible) in their bedrooms
- Extinguish all open fires made during a power cuts before you leave the area
- Ensure that you have a serviced fire extinguisher close to your braai area
- Never make open fires to prepare food near thatched roofs as they are extremely susceptible to ignition by sparks from open flames – both from the inside and outside of the roof
- Ensure that you have back-up batteries to operate your security gate and alarm system
- Make sure to use a safe candle holder if you use candles, and ensure that they are kept away from any flammable materials. Candles must be extinguished once power is restored
- Use paraffin stoves with great caution
- Never allow children to use open flames or heating agents during power cuts
- Some electronic gates open automatically during power cuts, ensure that you aware of this when power gets cut
- Invest in a portable power bank to charge your phone – you will need it to report any emergency during power cuts
- Be vigilant at all times
