Rising Stars South African Young Scientists Ready Shine
Two South African students have secured the opportunity to showcase their scientific prowess at the upcoming 2024 Taiwan International Science Fair. This follows their remarkable performance at the 2023 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF), where they presented impressive research projects.
Lethabo Molobi, a Grade 12 student at Zinniaville Secondary School in the North West’s Bojanala region, and Johannes Jacobus (Jaco) Deysel, a Grade 11 student at Hoërskool Jim Fouché in the Free State’s Bloemfontein region, have been selected to participate in the Taiwan fair scheduled from January 27 to February 2, 2024, at the National Taiwan Science Education Centre in Taipei. South Africa consistently engages in this fair, providing students with a platform to exhibit their research to peers from various countries. This participation promotes cross-cultural communication and facilitates educational exchange among young scientists.
Molobi, a Silver medalist at last year’s Eskom Expo ISF, will present her research project titled “From Human Intelligence to Artificial Intelligence Chatbots: Modern Day Writing.” The project investigates whether it is easy to differentiate between Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated text and human-generated text in a school setting.
Given the increasing relevance of A.I. and its potential impact on education, especially in developing countries, Molobi’s research delves into whether A.I. poses a threat to academic integrity and if society should transition towards a more adaptive educational environment.
