Voortrekker Monument Newsletter – October 2019
News
ABW Commemoration
We commemorated the Anglo Boer War this month. The Monument and the City of Tshwane presented a joint outing between Fort Klapperkop and Fort Schanskop during which members of the Commemoration Rides organisation rode from Fort Klapperkop to Fort Schanskop with their horses. Here, a message was sent with a heliograph to Fort Klapperkop: “Paul Kruger sends greetings”. Susanna was fired and the visitors then spent some time at the Fort for lunch.
School Visits
This month the Monument presented a free excursion to the impoverished PS Fourie Primary School of Eersterus.
Most of these children have never been to this side of town and have also never seen a live zebra or buck. The big building on the hill was also a mystery.
According to Mr Driesman Bester, the visit was an exciting event for all of them.
Award
Readers of the Record have once again this year voted the Monument as being the best place in Pretoria to take out-of-towners.
This is part of the Record’s annual Best of Pretoria campaign.
Art Exhibition
The southern school districts of Tshwane presented an exhibition of their learners’ works in Gallery 20.20 in October. The work by some of these young artists is exceptional.
Upgrading Toilets
Please note that we are currently busy upgrading the men’s toilets at the assegaai (spear) gates. Please make use of the toilets at the Avocado Deli during this time. There are no toilet facilities once you have passed the assegaai (spear) gates.
