Tshwane to host a Symposium on Drug and Substance Abuse
30 May 2019
From the 3rd until 4th June 2019, the City of Tshwane will host a Drug and Substance Abuse Symposium that is aimed at creating awareness and gathering together all relevant stakeholders in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
As most cities, Tshwane is severely affected by the existence of a drug called nyaope, which has been identified as a substance that dominates the streets of the capital city. The City has also observed an increase in the intravenous drug use known as “Bluetooth” – which further exacerbates the challenges in our communities and impacts on the health system. Drugs are an extreme social calamity and if not attended to, could result in the total collapse of known community structures.
The Customer Satisfaction Survey for Households conducted in 2018 by the City also indicates that drug and substance abuse is one of the top five strategic challenges the City is facing. Given the complexity this drug abuse problem, the City believes that it can adequately address this challenge through the collective wisdom of various stakeholders within and outside government.
The objectives of the symposium are as follows:
- Consult all stakeholders on their roles in drug and substance abuse within the boundaries of the City of Tshwane
- Identify best practices from all stakeholders
- Identify gaps in the current strategies
- Identify strategies to close the identified gaps
The symposium will be held as follows:
Date: 3 to 4 June 2019
Time: 07:00 to 17:00
Venue: Royal Elephant Hotel and Conference Centre, Bondev Park, Cnr Willem Botha Street and Wierda Road, Eldoraigne in Centurion
